Build a Weighted Session, Step by Step

An ordered ramp from load selection to working sets, with stop rules and the three failure modes that appear when the order is skipped.

The ramp starts with load selection: pick a zone from the percentage table before touching the vest. The zone determines the repetition band, and the repetition band determines how the sets are counted.

Second comes the body-weight stage. Perform the movement without the vest first, so the pattern is controlled at zero added load. Skipping this stage is the most common route to going too heavy too fast.

Third, put the vest on and re-check breathing. Heavy nylon and neoprene vests can constrict breathing and cause overheating, so the fit is verified before the first working set rather than during it.

Fourth, run the working sets in the chosen band — 8 to 12 repetitions per set in the medium zone — and take sets to failure or close to failure only when hypertrophy is the goal.

Fifth, the stop rules: pain in the working joints or an inability to complete a breath ends the set. Shearing in pull-ups is a placement failure that also stops the session — the vest rubs against the body under load and can damage the wearer or the vest itself.

  • Step 1 — pick a load zone from the percentage table.
  • Step 2 — body-weight repetitions of the movement.
  • Step 3 — put the vest on and re-check breathing.
  • Step 4 — working sets in the 8 to 12 repetition band.
  • Step 5 — stop on pain or breathing failure.
  • Failure: too heavy too fast — joint strain before the pattern is controlled.
  • Failure: shearing in pull-ups — vest rubs against the body under load.
  • Failure: overheating in nylon — breathing constriction and trapped heat.
